Why It Matters

The cost of "free" school adds up fast

Public education is often nominally free in the countries where Entraide Asia works, but a family still has to pay for notebooks, pens, a uniform, and sometimes exam or exercise-book fees each term. For a family living on a small farming or day-labor income, that recurring cost is often the actual reason a child stops attending — not a lack of interest in school.

Teachers face a parallel problem: many are paid very little, and schools with no budget for materials expect them to improvise. Supporting materials and teacher training keeps good teachers in the classroom and keeps the classroom stocked well enough for them to teach.

How This Works

What a term of classroom support covers

1

Books & Supplies

Notebooks, pens, textbooks and basic classroom materials distributed at the start of each school year so no student starts the term empty-handed.

2

Uniforms

New uniforms provided where required, removing one of the more visible reasons a child might feel unable to attend or be sent home.

3

Teacher Training

Contributions toward training so teachers — often managing large, mixed-age classes — have stronger tools for reaching every student.

4

Fair Compensation

Helping schools pay teachers a wage that reflects the job, so experienced staff aren't forced to leave teaching for better-paid work.

Seen in Action

Bayon School, Cambodia

At Bayon School, new students receive school materials and two uniforms a year, and secondary students are given a bicycle to get to class — small, practical items that, together, are often the difference between a family keeping a child enrolled and pulling them out to help at home.

How Entraide Asia Helps

Covering the costs families can't always absorb

Entraide Asia works with school staff each year to identify what materials and support are actually needed, rather than sending a standard package regardless of local conditions. The goal is simple: make sure the cost of basic supplies is never the reason a child leaves school.
